This has been a funny old week for the news. Some of it has been amusing, some harrowing, some interesting, and some just plain creepy. Hopefully, this episode of Open Mic News captures at least one of these four categories with today’s show.

This show is somewhat shorter than normal. This is becuase Hedgie and I actually stayed on topic (for the most part), and so the news stories that would have normally filled an hour quite nicely only filled around 45 minutes. Still, it’s the quality of the presenting that’s important - and here’s the news we talked about…

UK - Clarkson Rapped For “Ginger Beer” Rhyming Slang
“Top Gear” presenter Jeremy Clarkson was criticised by the media watchdog on Monday for describing a car as “very ginger beer”, rhyming slang for “queer”.

Beirut - Blast In Beirut After Days Of Violence
A bomb has rocked a car park in the Lebanese capital Beirut, injuring at least seven people.

US - Stallone Fined For Hormone Import
Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone has been convicted of importing a banned growth hormone into Australia and has been ordered to pay fines and costs.

Russia - Russian Chess Great Stopped At Airport
Police prevented chess champion and opposition leader Garry Kasparov from boarding a flight Friday to the city of Samara, where he planned to take part in a protest march coinciding with a Russia-EU summit. News artical provided by listener: Destined

US - Gonzales Proposes New Crime: ‘Attempted’ Copyright Infringement
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is pressing the U.S. Congress to enact a sweeping intellectual-property bill that would increase criminal penalties for copyright infringement, including “attempts” to commit piracy. News artical provided by OMN Host: Macavity

UK/World - Tea ‘Healthier’ Drink Than Water
Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers.

Doctor Finds Spiders Living In Boy’s Ear

No show

Filed under: errors, site news — Sci @ 11:03 pm

Sorry, no show today. I was hoping to be ready for shows again, but things are too busy on my part still. On that note, if anyone knows good techniques for organising or time management, drop me a line. Poor organisation ment I didn’t arrange a backup.

Things will hopefully be back to normal soon. We might even have a “relaunch” of sorts.

I do note though we missed a trick last week. Macavities extra-long (and first show recorded out and about!) went out on World Press Freedoms Day. Go take a look.

It’s still Thursday morning somewhere . . .

Anywho, I was in Kingston on Tuesday, as I had to see the dentist. (Bear with me here.)

After I was finished at the dentist, I headed to the local mall, where I hooked up with my firend Happy Bob, who last week agreed to co-host today’s episode of Open Mic News.

I must warn you though, we did go off on several tangents during the show, some of which were very silly, and thus the show is longer than usual almost an hour and a half!

But we did manage to cover all the stories we wanted to cover, and here they are:

Followup Section

Followup from Destined: Bill Would Overturn Current Webcasting Royalty Increases

Main Show

US: Huge Anti-Spam Suit Targets Email Harvesters (also from Destined)

US/World: Google pulls sponsored ads linked to data-swiping sites (yet again from Destined!)

Canada/World: Ontario to build solar farm

World: DVD ripping ruled legal in Kaleidescape lawsuit

. . . preceded by how the whole mess started

. . . and followed by (surprise surprise) a statement that the DVD CCA intends to appeal the decision.

The music at the end of this episode is Halo: Fall From Above (You Can’t Stop) by Arkimedes of OverClocked ReMix.
