Hey there everyone. Only one week behind schedule, it’s here at last. Open Mic News goes live!

I’m Sci, and since OMN started off as my baby, I’ve taken show number one. Don’t be too harsh, none of us are professionals and it’ll take a little while for us to get a bit of polish on things. But for the very first show, I think it went pretty well. But like all news stories, reports, reviews and opinion pieces, please send critiques to news@openmicnews.org

Or leave a comment on this post.

If you don’t know what OMN’s about, I sugest you check the links at the top of the page.

In the news this Monday, February 26th, 2007!

“How could you work for the man?!” Because they were 70’s blaxploitation dolphins..

Have you found something important hidden away on some obscure news site? Or maybe you’ve spotted something in a well known story that’s not getting mentioned? Maybe you have an opinion or idea that we should really hear about, or some feedback on one of the shows you’ve heard. Or maybe even (god help us) you want to ask us for advice on something?

If it’s any of the above, or even if it’s not, send your news and stories to the news team at: news@openmicnews.org

We can’t promise that your story will get read, but if it is, we’ll be sure to credit you in the show by the name of your choice.

If you have something that you’d like to send to only one host in particular, then flag it as such and send it to the above address. We don’t have the seperate email redirects set up as yet.

Be aware that by sending something to an individual host, the subject may not get covered until their next slot comes around, which may be some time. Hopefully the host will let you know.

How to join up as either a host or a feild reporter.

Listen

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:11 pm

There are four basic ways of listening to Open Mic News.

Download

The most obvious way of getting to listen to the show is to hit the “Download” link you see at the end of the news posting. Download the audio file to your PC, laptop, etc, and listen with the media player of your choice.

The Flash Player

However, the news post should have a small object embedded at the end of it, next to the download link, looking like this:

Player

If you don’t see it, try hitting the “Play now” link to load the flash player there and then, or “Play in popup” to open a small new window dedicated to playing a live stream of the audio file.

Link

Link

This will not save a copy to your machine, however.
If after these steps you still do not see the flash player, it is possible you don’t have flash installed on your browser.

RSS/Podcast

If you never want to miss an episode of OMN, you want to get hooked up to our RSS feed. Every time a new post goes up, the feed will let you know!

RSS

OMN now features split feeds. On the left you’ll find the feed for podcasts only. On the right, the mix of audio and text reports. It’s your choice, but unless you’re running the feed into Itunes or other dedicated audio feed managers, then the Full Newsfeed is for you, as you’ll still get the option wether to download the media or not.
Just click the RSS icon at the top of the listing, and you’ll be taken to the Audio or OMN feeds. From there you’ll be asked to choose the RSS client of your choice. Then whenever a new post is available, you’ll be alerted to it right away!

This is also achieved through websites that monitor large numbers of feeds for you.

Rebroadcast

There is the chance that you may even hear this show being broadcast as part of the playlist of a small radio or web station. If we know about it, we’ll list them here. If you hear our broadcasts somewhere that’s not listed here, send us an email about it!
We don’t mind at all, we’d just like to know who just likes us that much.

Sci
The ideas man. Founder and first host of OMN, Sci decided that Open Mic News just had to be done. While still exploring styles and methods of getting the news across, is finding the longer this goes, the more holes and flaws he sees in the majority of the mainstream.

Macavity
The dedicated post apocalyptic newscaster. In the short time OMN has been running, Macavity has proven commitment to the show, often traveling several miles through highly adverse weather conditions to upload his shows, using whatever equipment he can hack together.

TK
The experienced one. TK has been running his own entertainment web-radio station, Tiger Tails Radio, for several years. With this in mind he joins us as the most experienced webcaster on the team, bringing his expertise and mixing some entertainment into the mix.

The Admin
While not a host, The Admin requires a mention. He/She/It keeps the site ticking over, edits posts and tollerates the noisey pressenters and commentators using his system. So far he has only used his powers for good.

News theme

icon for podpress  Newsflash - OMN Show Outro [1:39m]: Download (278)

The news theme we’re using initially is a chopped-down version of “Newsflash” by SoundClick artist “One Winged Angel“, and is used with his permission and under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 licence.

The original track has been divided into two halves. The beginning as intro, and the end as an optional outro, in case hosts have no alternative item to cap the end of their show.

The outro can be faded out as need be, but the intro must be played clearly until after the “Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt..” audio sample. So, after 33 seconds, it’s the hosts to do with as they like. This is simply to give all the news show with their varying hosts and styles a consistent beginning, and let listeners know that they are in fact still listening to the same show.
To help further encourage hosts to make their shows compelling, an additional maximum of 15-20seconds of other audio may be played before the standard intro, but no more.

About OMN

Open Mic News is a new experiment in “open-source” news programming. In mid-February, 2007, the project went live. A steady rotation of different news hosts and their individual styles will be available for your enjoyment and education, every Monday and Thursday.

The intention is for this mix of hosts to eliminate single-host burnout, which can leave a show off-air for months on end, but also to allow the experimentation and evolution of new ways of getting the untold news across to you.

But why call it “open source”? Because you too can be a host. If you feel you’re up to it, submit a half-hour demo show to the existing hosts and we’re more likely than not to give you a shot.

Don’t think you could handle a whole show? Well, we’ll be accepting audio reporters, experts and opinion pieces too. (though their use will be at the discretion of the scheduled show host) So if you have extra knowledge on current events, or have found yourself on the doorstep of breaking news, we’ll certainly want to hear from you too!

We all look forward to reading your news stories, listening to your reports, questions and (of course) feedback.

Origins

The inspiration for Open Mic News came from the Rant Radio news show NewsReal with Sean Kennedy, and it’s 7-month hiatus from June, 2006.

For the entirety of 2005, Sean had broadcast news on a daily basis, reporting on the news that getting missed in mainstream news media. In 2006 the wear began to show, and he was forced to cut down to weekly shows. Sean had taken the amazing step, you see, of effectively letting the internet employ him. He took donations to cover his living costs so he could dedicate himself to the news. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to keep him going.

Eventually though, and after another six months of weekly broadcasts, Sean had to call a hiatus. He went off to rejoin the Canadian army, sorting out his life, income and health.

Despite the fact that in January 2006, NewsReal returned to our ears, during those 7 months fans of the show bemoaned it’s loss. People passed around news stories among themselves on the Rant Radio forums, wondering how long the break would last. About three months in, ideas started circulating in the forums about having fans of the show fill in for Sean until he was ready and able to return. The idea got no feedback from the powers that be, so the idea began to change to creating new news shows in it’s image. A few people talked about it, and a couple of one-off recordings were made. It became clear though that simply mimicking NewsReal would not be enough.

It took another few months of planning in private, picking up ideas and suggestions before the site to manage a show could even begin being built. At the beginning of 2007, the ETA was assumed to be mid-February. On Monday February 26th, 2007, the first show is broadcast. Only one week over schedule.

Crucial differences

As it says above, one of the main differences between Open Mic News and it’s inspiration is that it uses multiple hosts on a rotation. Producing two shows a week, Mondays and Thursdays, with only four hosts means that a single host only has to worry about putting out a show themselves once a fortnight.

It also gives more flexibility to the style of the shows. Who’s to say that the classic host and audience format is the best way to convey the news? If you have the skill to sing the news, why shouldn’t you? If you want to do it as an audio-drama, why not? If you want to out-source stories to a selection of local reporters, go for it!

We want to get the news out there, as well as encourage a bit of experimentation with the format. Aside from the standard news-theme, the rest of that one hour slot is pretty much the hosts to do with as they wish.

OMN is also primarily a podcast download, not a web-radio baudcast. This means that when the show’s up to download it’s up to download. No lag between a live-cast and whenever the show is manually transferred to the website.

There is also the intention to get a number of the hosts together quarterly for an extended special review, going over the biggest issues and trends we’ve seen in the past three months. Certainly something not to be missed!

The similarities

OMN is also not censored, though we’d like to keep outright obscenity on the low. We actually want to keep what audience we get.

We’re also counting on you the listener to send us those news stories you’re seeing get missed out by the mainstream media. Take a look at the “SUBMIT” link to do so.
And finally, this show is free to download distribute as you see fit! Pass it on to everyone and anyone. Let the news run free.

The Theme

For information on the Open Mic News theme tune, please see this post.

The site

The website theme was contributed by the talented Douglas “Flash McCloud” Bouttell.

It was then sewn together and configured by the outstanding “Lance Leventhal”, our IT and go-to guy. This was done using Wordpress, Podpress and a number of other plugins and custom work.

Hosting is currently provided by SolidHost, who’ve been very helpfull.
